Last night I had the worst night's sleep ever! I seriously woke up every hour feeling like my throat was going to explode. Around 5 I woke up and was just bawling it hurt so bad, so I took some ibuprofen and used some throat spray and was able to get relief long enough to sleep for a few hours.

Now I'm feeling a big better than I was yesterday, no chills, still a sore throat but could be worse. It's furlough Friday so I'm just hanging out. Adam's going to get our laundry from his mom so I popped in some Project Runway from Netflix (he hasn't wanted to watch it with me) and am eating some cheese curds, probably the best food choice for a sore throat. :)

Okay, my tonsils are swollen, and my neck hurts, and my tonsils have white spots on them, and my breath smells bad. COOL! This happened when I had mono freshman year but I'm pretty sure you can't get mono again but who knows! Whatever! Maybe this is my body's way of telling me to go back to eating healthier. Ugh. I'm so ready to get outta here!

Thank god today is ThursdayFriday! (That's what Adam & I call it when I have Furlough Fridays). Got up, did my cardio (4 days in a row, woo hoo!) and here I am at work again, with nothing to do. Adam gave me a ride to work this morning, then after he dropped me off he went home and made coffee and brought it to me. So sweet! It's so chilly outside, but I have my heater going, my Brazilian Pandora radio station, and my coffee. Hopefully today will be a quiet day.

Just discovered Iron Chef is now available to watch online. YES!!! I'm just starting the second episode.

This afternoon we went on a hike, forging through someone's backyard to see if we could find a short cut. It worked! We then hiked through the forest and got some redwood ions, then hiked down California ave and picked a giant amount of wild blackberries. I made a blackberry cobbler and some custard to pour on top. I also made Tex Mex sloppy joes with bell peppers and fresh corn. YUM! I ate dessert before dinner, maybe not the best idea, but now I'm eating my sloppy joe innards and watching Iron Chef. Perfect Sunday evening.

I haven't written in forever. I thought I'd post briefly to write that I haven't been doing much exciting, just working! Adam & I's 1 year anniversary was on Saturday. We went down to the grove where we got married and hiked around and had a picnic. We have also recently discovered a wonderful new sushi restaurant, Sushi Tao. I've been cooking Japanese food since eating there. Work is the same, we've started our furloughs and 10% pay cut..I kind of don't mind, I like the days off!

I have lots of pics to post, someday I'll get to that!

More Things I Don't Like

I work on the first floor of my building, but right near my door is the door to the stairwell, so I run up to the second floor to use the bathroom, which is right at the top of the stairs. It's actually quicker than walking through the office and out in the lobby to use the bathroom. The second floor bathroom is also nicer: it has four stalls, and isn't as smelly because there aren't a bunch of students in and out, and there's not the occasional homeless person taking a sink bath (yes, I've seen it myself). The Financial Aid office is on the second floor so it's pretty clean because it's just office ladies. I usually use the stall farthest in on the end next to the wall, because right when you walk in there's a big handicapped one and I don't want to take that one up, and then the second one in sometimes has a janky handle, and the other one is just in the middle so I'd rather not use it.

Anyway, quite a few times I've been in the last one, and someone will come in and plop down in the stall right next to me. Why? Why would you want to use the stall closest to the person that's already in there? Why not the other two, that aren't next to me? Maybe this is a silly pet peeve but I roll my eyes every time. I don't need you in there listening to me pee.

Two of my favorite games to play with Zoe (my kitten) are: hide until she comes down the stairs and chase her up the stairs. The first one entails her starting at the top of the stairs and me at the bottom, hiding around the corner. I peek my head around and quickly pull it back, then stand in silence until hear her pad a few stairs down. Then I quickly peek back around and then hide again. I do this until she gets all the way to the bottom. So cute! She sits there, waiting, and her little head is cocked to the side with wide eyes when I peek around to see her. I have to be really quiet and wait, because she'll start coming down to see if I've left. If she knows I'm there she won't.

The other game entails her being in a fiesty mood, and starts usually with her running all around the house. I try to catch her by the couch, then she darts the other way, I go that way, and eventually I chase her up the stairs, where she plops over for a big belly rub and cuddle. Xiao's not so much into these games, but is my cuddlebug at night. She comes walking up beside me, I open up the covers, and she kind of cuddles right next to me, either kneading my belly (which is really hurting lately because her claws are so sharp! They're due for more shots at the vet so I'll have them trim them, too!) or laying with her head by my armpit. She'll stay there all night, and whenever I wake up she's purring next to me. I LOVE MY GIRLS!

On Friday we woke up and worked off all the ice cream we ate the night before. We got some coffee from the lobby and Adam made a delicious breakfast--scrambled eggs with tomatoes and turkey lunch meat on a slice of whole wheat bread with some melted cheese. YUM!!! We showered up and then walked down to the main street, and thankfully caught a jitney pretty quickly. We got dropped off at Arawak Cay and went back to the Fish Fry restaurant where we got a to-go order of conch fritters and french fries, then we went to Ardastra Gardens & Zoo. SO MUCH FUN! They had tons of parrots and birds, two jaguars, some monkeys, and iguanas.

We got to go into a bird cage and feed little birdies, we held apples in our hands and they landed and munched away. Adam is definitely a bird person, they just loved him. He also made friends with a parrot in another section of the zoo--wherever he moved, it would follow. I, on the other hand, got chased by a regal looking bird and got a rooster to run around it's cage with me. We also watched a "marching" flamingos show, which wasn't too exciting but they are so neat to see in person. They just let them (and a peacock) roam around the zoo so I got some cool pics.

Thursday morning we woke up to rain rain rain. We watched some episodes of Charmed and talked about possible adventures for the rest of the trip: renting seadoos one day, going to Ardastra Gardens & Zoo and the Botanical Gardens one day, going to the Pirate's Museum and back to the Straw Market for a purse (hooray!), going to Atlantis for the day--catching the ferry downtown to Paradise Island at 9 AM, staying until 4 AM dancing in a club called Aura, then spending the rest of the morning people watching in the casino, then catching the 9 AM ferry again! I'm so excited.

After the rain cleared up, we headed down to the beach and played in the ocean...Adam was fond of picking up rocks and chucking them into the waves, I was having fun bobbing up and down. After napping in the sand for a bit we headed back to the hotel, showered, then headed back out again, planning on catching the jitney to head downtown. First we went back to the Gourmet Market to get a few things for later--some pasta sauce to use up the rest of the pasta, and Adam got a Ghiradelli citrus & caramel chocolate bar and some hecka good jalapeno chips. We went across the street and began waiting for the bus. After about a half hour we saw one going the other direction, so figured it would be coming back this way. We waited, and waited, and waited. There's construction going on kind of near the hotel so it's causing some delays. After waiting some more, we gave up and started walking back to the hotel. Then, of course, the jitney goes by. Whatever! Ugh.

When we got hungry, so got dressed again and walked back down to where the market is to a restaurant called Mangos, where we tried to go before to get ice cream. We were the only ones there. We got some popcorn shrimp, and Adam got a chicken ceaser wrap that came with a bowl of conch chili (very interesting, it tasted kinda like cumin), and I had a yummy latte. $50 bucks later (Adam got three Arnold Palmers--iced tea/lemonade--and it cost 9 bucks!) we walked over to the Gourmet Market again and got some ice cream. When we got home I promptly inhaled my ice cream and then we passed out from ice cream coma.

05/20/09 Wednesday

On Wednesday we thought we'd venture into Nassau. I got up in the morning and exercised (I'm doing Tracy Anderson workouts--she trains Madonna & Gwyneth Paltrow, and does a combo of ballet, dancing stuff, and pilates), we ate breakfast, then went down to catch the bus. When we got off the bus we headed down the main street. We checked out the Straw Market and Adam bought me a pair of neat earrings, and he got three for $5 shot glasses...so classy. They had lots of cute fake purses so I might go back and try to bargain with them to get one or two. The ones I brought back from China got so much use they're falling apart. When we emerged from the Straw Market, Adam decided he was hungry and I still hadn't gotten my ice cream, so we stopped by an Ice Cream Shoppe, where I got a super sweet flavor called Junkanoo, and Adam got a strawberry daquiri. Only appropriate!

When we left the ice cream place we got to see the huge cruise ships. They are just gigantic! We stopped in a few more shops and decided we might be tired, so thought we'd grab some rum (so much rum here!) and head back. We bought two diet cokes, two juice drinks, a bottle of Old Nassau mango rum and a bottle of dark rum, (all for $25) and hopped on the jitney to head back. We were the only ones on the bus, and after a bit of a ride decided to stop at Arawak Cay (pronounced 'key'), which is home of the Fish Fry. We asked the bus driver and his friend what they recommended, and they said the Fish Fry restaurant (which confused me, because I thought the whole thing was a fish fry) and to order the conch ('konk') salad, which I was planning on. We got to sit out on the covered balcony, though it did start raining and got us a few times with big drops. I got the conch salad & Adam got conch fritters and macaroni & cheese. Delicious!

After we finished eating we realized we only had enough cash to get back to the hotel, but not back into town to get more cash. Darn. So, we rode the jitney back into Nassau and pulled out some cash and then rode the jitney back to Orange Hill, and the whole thing took like 2 hours. A couple staying at the hotel has a really cute baby, and they sat in front of us during the ride back, and Adam was making faces at the baby the whole time and making it laugh. So cute!

When we got back I was pooped, so we ordered Domino's again (this time, thin crust cheese with buffalo wings!) and practically inhaled it. I also had a rum and coke that was mostly rum, so we were having fun.

On Tuesday morning we got up and went to the beach, as it was Danielle & Devin's last day. We spent about an hour there splashing around, then a huge storm started rolling in. It was the loudest thunder I'd ever heard! Lightening, torrential rain...now it's still cloudy but not too bad. We just ate lunch with them, and they took off to head back to New York.

We ended up hanging out at the hotel for a while, then I decided I wanted ice cream so we walked down the street to where the liquor store's located, because we saw a little restaurant called Mango that advertised ice cream. Unfortunately, it was closed. We checked out the directory and saw a gourmet grocery store listed, so went and checked it out. It was the nicest grocery store I've ever been in! It had all organic stuff, tons of the brands we buy at Ray's in McKinleyville (though way more expensive), lots of stuff from Europe (chocolates...truffles...), and expensive fresh produce. One pomegranate was $7.35! Whoa! Adam got a little sandwich for 8 bucks, and I was too sticker shocked I just got some stuff to make later: some whole wheat pasta with spicy marinara sauce, some Belgian Chocolate Truffles that I'd actually had before, from my old roommate Nikki. They are delicious. I'm going to buy at least another box or two to take home. It's only 9:30 AM when I'm writing this but I'm dying to have one now. We also bought a star fruit, which I can't find anywhere in Humboldt, and a banana snapple for me and an apple snapple for Adam. So good! Too bad the first ingredient was high fructose corn syrup. Yuck.

When we got back it started thundering and lightening some more. We spent the night just hanging out!

On Monday we got up around 10, had our room moved upstairs so we have an even better ocean view, and met up with Danielle & Devin to find Love Beach, which is west of the hotel. Rico told us that you can't get there easily--there's houses all along so it's kind of private. We thought we'd go for it anyway! First we walked down to the liquor store and I bought some coconut rum, a soda called Goombay Punch, and Adam got a Kalik (local beer) and an orange pineapple drink. We walked back to the hotel and caught the jitney at the end of the driveway. The bus driver dropped us off at Compass Point, a colorful hotel and restaurant. We walked a little farther, then Adam saw a narrow little alleyway that looked like you might be able to follow it to the beach. It went right next to someone's future home (it was under construction), so we walked along where their pool will be and ended up on a really nice beach! We parked ourselves underneath a palm tree that was situated in front of someone elses' property, and ran into the ocean to swim around. We'd gotten flippers this time so I flipped all around, swimming far out and then back in, down to the bottom...there wasn't much to look at, but still so much fun. We all went back to the towels and drank some more, then Adam & Devin went back to the waves and rolled around like 6 year olds. Danielle & I hung out under the palm tree and chatted and watched the guys.

We all took a few pics by the palm trees, then caught the bus back. After we showered we caught the bus again and headed into downtown Nassau, where we were going to try to find a local restaurant called the Bahamian Kitchen (and they don't say bahahm-ian, they say baheemian). We ended up realizing the restaurant was pretty far away, so we went back to a restaurant Danielle & Devin had been to before, Conch Fritters, which is also the name of a popular dish. Of course, we ordered conch fritters for an appetizer, and I had a baked "loaded" potato (it was the cheapest thing on the menu at 5.95...for a potato!). Adam had a BLT, and we got guava duff for dessert...which wasn't as delicious as I hoped it would be. It was a kind of thick cake with a buttery guava sauce over it. Adam wasn't too impressed with it either.

After dinner we caught the last 7:00 bus back to the hotel and commenced drinking the rest of the coconut rum with orange juice. After a few drinks we played a drinking game Devin & Danielle knew, which I was horrible at, then we played King's Cup, which ended up with us yelling and drunk. :) We went over to the pool and they splashed around a bit, then it was off to bed at 1 AM.

05/17/09 Sunday

On Sunday we woke up really early (7:30 AM, which is really 4:30 in California time!). We went down and had some mediocre breakfast (I had some eggs and a slice of chewy ham, some coffee and some frosted mini wheats) and talked to the front desk about changing our room. They said we could move to an upstairs room on Monday. We went back to our room and crashed until 10:15--the grocery run leaves at 10:30. We hopped in the van with Rico who checked us in the night before, and went on a rip-roaring ride down the narrow streets of Nassau. The streets are so narrow, and it's kind of crazy driving on the "wrong" side of the street. We ended up at City Market, the local grocery store. We grabbed a cart and went at it. It was a pretty typical grocery store, and pretty busy. We got some cereal, milk, OJ, Lean Pockets, some bread, lunchmeat, tomatoes, lettuce and cheese for sandwiches, some shampoo, some saline for Adam's contacts, and a few other things. It ended up being $80, but we were ready for that...things are a lot more expensive here because they have to be shipped in. We went back to the room and had a bit to eat, then turned on The Rock and napped while watching it. It's so nice to be able to nap whenever we want to!

We had talked on Saturday night about going out to dinner with Danielle and Devin. They went on a booze cruise earlier that day--they said it was $60 and you ride out on a boat, snorkel for a bit, then climb back aboard and drink as much as you want. They got pretty toasted, so when Devin stopped by we decided to meet up at 8:30 or 9:00, to walk to a restaurant down the road called Traveler's Rest.

We ended up napping some more, then took off down the road. The hotel we're staying in (Orange Hill Beach)

Okay, I have to stop writing for one minute--there is the most massive thunderstorm I have ever existed in going on outside right now. The thunder is frightening and resonates around the sky and my room. Dang!

Now, back to the story.

The hotel we're staying in is about a 10 minute taxi ride from the airport, and set away from downtown, maybe 20 minute bus ride. There's not a lot going on around the hotel, but if you walk east a bit you'll run into a shopping complex, and if you go west you'll get to Traveler's Rest. The roads are not pedestrian friendly at all, so you have to walk along grass and rubble to get to your destination. The walk to Traveler's Rest was about 15 minutes in the dark, and it was kinda rainy earlier so we got muddy. When we got there there was a live band playing lots of catchy popular tunes. Adam & I ordered banana daquiris, Devin got a mango one (Danielle decided no alcohol for her that night as she had too much fun at the booze cruise). I ordered ribs, which came with peas & rice and macaroni & cheese. The ribs were SO GOOD. I inhaled them. I was done eating before anyone else. Devin got the ribs too, & Danielle

AHHH!!!! The thunder sounds like it is literally right outside the window!!! OMGOMG.

Actually, I don't remember what Danielle got, but Adam got a cheeseburger, which was delicious!

As we were finishing up, I said, why don't you pay with the card instead of cash so we can hang onto the cash. Adam said, okay, let me get out my wallet. Uh...where's my wallet? He was sure he brought it. Commence freaking out. Let's try for 1 disaster per day. First day, forget the plane tickets. Second day, lose Adam's wallet. So, we started on the walk back. It was raining, muddy, and completey dark in sections, only illuminated temporarily by passing headlights. At one point, I got splashed by a car that went through a giant puddle. It's like the movies! As we got closer and closer to the hotel, we were losing hope. Adam said, I'll wake up at sunrise and run along and try to find it. My one hope was that it might be on the swinging bench that we sat on for a minute before dinner. We were so focused on the ground we completely passed by the hotel. We turned back and Adam dashed up the stairs...thankfully, there was his wallet, a little damp, but hanging out on the swing.

We'd left Danielle and Devin at the restaurant, so they arrived shortly after we did. We decided we definitely needed a drink. At the hotel there's an open bar, so I had a rum punch and Adam had a beer. We got 'kicked out' at 12 AM when the lobby/bar area closes, so sat outside for a little bit and drank our drinks, then headed back to the hotel room and crashed.

We left around 1 AM, got gas, and I drove part of the way, to Santa Rosa. When we got there we got a snack and switched off & Adam drove the rest of the way to SFO. We parked the car in long term parking and then caught the shuttle to the main terminal. Upon arriving, we had trouble checking in at the kiosk, so Adam got in line and they were like, oh you have paper tickets. And I was like, no we don't. ............ohhh....I vaguely remember getting paper tickets back in February....and they're in McKinleyville! FUCK!!!!!! So, we had to buy all new tickets, and exacctly 1 year from now we can get refunded from our 'lost tickets'. I was so mad. Somehow we managed to get on the exact same flight we were supposed to be on to Atlanta. Our original flight had us flying out at 6 AM PST, landing at 1:35 PM EST and then flying to Florida at 2:35 PM, arriving at 4, and having a layover until 8:30, where we'd catch an hour flight to Nassau and arrive at 9:30. So, our 6 AM flight ended up getting delayed because Atlanta had weather issues, and we didn't get there until 2:30 PM, but our new flight (Atlanta to Nassau direct!) was at 5. Nice! So we got some food at Chili's, and I had a gigantic margarita, and was generally pretty happy. The flight to Nassau was pretty easy and the airport was so low key. We got in at 8 PM (an hour & 1/2 earlier than our original flight!) There was hardly anyone there. We didn't check luggage so we just went out and caught a taxi...a 10 minute ride later and we were at the hotel, the Orange Hill Beach Inn.

The guy at check in was lively, his name was Rico and he's worked here for 29 years. Wow!! He told us about the honor bar (just put a check for alcoholic drinks, an x for sodas, and a 'large' or 'small' for waters. Easy!). He told us that Domino's delivers, let them know what dishes we need for cooking and they'll get it, the beach is across the street & open 24/7, as is the pool. The Seven Rum Punch is equal to 4 beers but doesn't taste like it and is half the calories and full of vitamin C. Get me one of those! We went to our hotel room (just fine!), it's on the bottom floor, but he told us that the people above us are leaving tomorrow (but don't tell them we know that!) so we should go to the front desk and tell them we're staying for 15 nights and we really would like an upstairs room with a balcony, and if there's anyone leaving....and it's our honeymoon...so Adam's gonna work his charms tomorrow. We changed into our bathing suits and I put on a summer dress and we headed over to the bar and got a rum punch (SOOO GOOD). We took them out to the little swing and sipped them and freaked out that we're actually here. We got another drink (this time, Adam got a beer) and we headed down to the beach. I ran around like a crazy person in the waves and got completely soaked, and after getting my energy out we went back up to the bar, where I had more drinks, and we met two nice people, Devin and Danielle, a boyfriend & girlfriend on vacation from New York. They'd just finished their finals, and they'd been here since last Thursday. We ended up chatting the night away. We got our pizza, shared it with them, and they made us a Mai Tai with rum and mixer they got from the grocery store. We ended up getting kicked out of the bar area at 12 AM so we went to the pool and drank some Arbor Mist & chatted. Now we're back in our hotel room (it's about 2 AM, EST....only 11 PST so not that bad).

Tomorrow morning we're getting up for breakfast so we can sweet talk them into giving us a balcony upstairs room, and then at 10:30 we'll go on the grocery run to get some food for the room to cook for breakfast and lunch. I cannot wait to see the ocean tomorrow. I'm going to die. It is going to be so blue and amazing.

I'm so happy to be here!!!

05/15/09 Friday - Our trip to Lakeport

On Friday I woke up super tired. I only had to go to work and finish up everything, then I could go. I jammed through my morning stuff and the mail finally got there at 10. I finished everything by 11:30 and took off. I had tons of packing left to do, so I did that, which took forever, we got gas, left instructions for Amanda (who's watering our plants), packed up the kits, and took off around 3. The drive was uneventful, we listened to Jamiroquai and Lilly Allen's new one, and got to Lakeport around 6. Mom ordered a pizza so we ate that and watched the newish Saturday Night Live with Justin Timberlake. Then Adam & I went downstairs and fell asleep for a few hours.

Okay, I'm not quite sure the best way to do this, so I'm just gonna upload by day.

So, on my birthday after work we went to Libation, a wine bar in Arcata, with Stacie, Mari, Andrea, and Vicki (my coworkers), Heather (my roomie from freshman year) and Adam. They weren't doing a wine tasting that night so they had a special bottle of my favorite wine, Gewurztraminer, open, and a bottle of red for those who preferred red. We drank the two bottles and Adam had a beer, then went over to the bar to have a flaming Dr. Pepper. The Alibi said "We don't set things on fire" so Adam stayed there to get some food and Heather & I went over to Sidelines to get a drink with Mari, Stacie, & Vicki. We did our shot, then Heather & I did another tequila shot, then we went back over to the Alibi to wait for Adam to finish. After he ate, Heather & Adam said, it's your birthday, what do you want to do? I said, I want to run at the beach! And they said, Okay, let's go!!! We left, and ended up going over to Heather's, where we made a Jell-O cheesecake, and she made some spicy chicken with carrots. I rolled around on the ground and picked out music for us to listen to, and around 11 PM headed home. My little kits were terrorists and made so much noise, I barely got any sleep.

Rest of Photo Assignment

[info]silhouetted
Well, of course I waited until the last possible minute to do my photo assignment. It's due at 7PM tonight so I went at 3PM to put them in the print folder. Adam was a good sport and we went out today to the Azalea Reserve and the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. He even did a costume change :) So, here are the rest of my pics. I have a ton more I want to post, from my San Diego trip, cooking (today I made chicken steamed in lotus leaves, bell peppers and garlicy black beans, and banana fritters!), and the beautiful nature up here. Now I'm in a good mood because my photo assignment is done, so I want to play with the rest of my pics, just for fun. I still have one more thing to do this semester: watch 2 films (Country Teachers & Rhapsody of Spring or something) for the Chinese Film Seminar class I missed (it was on a Friday night...instead of going to it, I went wine tasting and for a drink with my coworkers!). I have to write a little reflective paper and turn it in on Monday. I'm not even taking real classes and I manage to slack on them.

Anyway, here are the rest of my pics!

I'll post more pics and stories in a bit.

Here are the first two pictures I'm going to turn in for my photo project. I'm not sure what the theme is...I don't think I just want to take pictures of people on the ground (currently my only subject is Adam), but it might be interesting. Anyway! I'm feeling inspired and ready to take more pics!

Tomorrow Adam & I are going to the dance festival with my co-worker, Andrea. We're also going to a wine tasting, it's a special one, 7 wines for $5! It's at Libations, a wine bar in Arcata. It's nice there, I don't feel out of place even though I've hardly done any wine tasting! After that we might get some dinner, then the show starts at 7:30. It's free for students too.

It's getting late, we're off to bed soon!

I tried putting rubbing alcohol in it and that didn't work. Gross! Get out of my ear, water!
